Ada was born in London, England with a twisted foot, making it really hard for her to walk. Her mom is embarrassed by Ada’s foot, so she will not let Ada leave their apartment- ever. Ada’s family is incredibly poor, and to make matters worse, her mother is extremely cruel to Ada too. World War II has been declared. The London officials want to evacuate all the children to the countryside, to protect them from bombs that might be dropped on London. Ada’s brother Jamie is going to be evacuated, so Ada sneaks onto the train with him, to escape her mother.
You will love watching Ada change and grow in this story. She learns to walk, read, and realize she is a worthwhile person who other people love.
