This story is set back in the 1880s. Hanna and her dad move from California to the Dakota territory to open their own business. Hanna is half-Asian. People in the small town where they settle do not want Hanna to go to school. Before her mom died, she told Hanna how much she wanted Hanna to go to school and graduate. Hanna is also a very talented dressmaker. She wants to help her father at his dry-goods store by sewing beautiful dresses. Her father is reluctant for her to work for him as a dressmaker. Hanna is determined to go to school and show her father she can be his partner at his dry-goods store.
