Mia’s family moved to America from China when she was eight. She is now 10 years old, and her family has been struggling to make ends meet in America. Things were so bad- they had to live in their car for a while. Now her parents got a job managing a hotel! They are super excited at first because they get to live at the hotel for free, plus they get paid to take care of everything. However, the hotel owner starts to cheat them out of their wages, and refuses to help them make the hotel safer, even after Mia’s mom gets attacked! Mia works at the front desk, so her parents have more time to clean the rooms at the hotel. Mia wants to help her family make it in America, so she decides to enter a writing contest- where she could win a hotel for her parents to own themselves.
You will admire Mia’s hard work, persistence, and problem-solving attitude. For example, at one point in the story, the hotel’s washing machine breaks and they have to figure out a way to wash all the hotel sheets without it!
