When I was an elementary student, I remember feeling overwhelmed when I went to our school library. Where would I find books I would like? I wished our librarian would recommend good books, and show us where to find them. When I finally found all the Greek Mythology books, I felt like I had hit the jackpot! After I read all the ones with great pictures of the Greek Gods and Goddesses (D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths), I wondered where to go for my next library book. I got lucky when I spied the covers of the Little House on the Prairie books, and I was busy until I finished the series. I would have been thrilled if my librarian would have said to me, “I see you really enjoyed the Little House on the Prairie books, you might also like Caddie Woodlawn!” There is definitely a place for kids looking around and happening upon books they will love, but there is also a need for someone to give them a few hints or suggestions about books they may want to try. The purpose of this site is to help kids find really good books. All the books on this site have been read and enjoyed by myself, but more importantly, my students have told me they loved these books. I have purposely left-out some of my all-time favorite children’s books (A Wrinkle in Time, Over Sea, Under Stone…), because when I recommended these books to my students, they told me the books were “o.k” and maybe they would finish them. The books on this website are definitely “kid approved.” My students have asked me for other books that are “like” the ones on this website, or have asked me for other books by the authors of these books.
